The School of Agricultural Technology is designed and established to produce graduates that are competent and skilled in deploying modern techniques involved in setting up farms in all crops production, fisheries, livestock and micro-livestock production, processing, storage and marketing of agricultural produce, production of all types of animal feeds and also conducting agricultural extension services to assist rural farmers/fishermen and ensure transfer of knowledge and modern techniques in agricultural and fisheries production processes. Also in the School, students are expected to attach to farms, institutes and allied firms for a four-month Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the end of each year of the programme in order to acquire more field/factory-based technical skills to enhance their capacities.

This School is made up of two major departments namely; Department of Agricultural Technology and Department of Fisheries Technology. The Agric. Tech. Department is the mother of other units such as Crop Production, Animal Production, Agricultural Extension Management, Agribusiness Management and Horticultural Production under which the National Diploma (ND) programme is hosted. The National Diploma is a two year programme i.e. four semesters of classroom, laboratory, field and workshop activities in the School. The different sub-departments represent the different sections in Agricultural Technology which evolves to full departments on accreditation for Higher National Diploma programmes (HND). This simply put, means that students admitted into ND Agricultural Technology may choose to specialize in any of the named sections at the HND level while those admitted into ND Fisheries Technology will progress to HND in Fisheries Technology where they will be exposed to diverse fisheries/aquatic dynamics such as Oceanography and Hydrobiology.

The School of Agricultural Technology thus uses diverse methods in the teaching and learning processes which include basically, lecturing, discussion classes, tutorials, hands-on field & laboratory practical sessions, quizzes/tests and finally examinations to judge students’ academic abilities. Scoring anything less than 2.00 point GPA (Grade Point Average) means failure.

Students are therefore enjoined to settle down and get focused on the reason why they are in the Polytechnic, in order to make good grades and progress from ND to HND and proceed to the labour market where they will compete with others and show their competencies and employability or still show innovative abilities to establish agro-based firms and agribusinesses to employ others.
